Businesses urged to invest in training to tackle skills shortages

PACKAGING Services Europe (PSE) has urged the logistics supply chain to invest in training to help address industry skills gaps.

The wash, inspect and repair service provider for plastic pallets and packaging said moves to upskill its own workforce has resulted in area manager Pete Tanner achieving RTITB certification in counterbalance (forklift) truck training. The completion of the course enables him to plan, prepare and deliver lift truck training to an RTITB standard.

Jane Gorick, co-founder of PSE said, “As the leading provider of wash, inspect and repair services for plastic pallets, we have an important role to play in the wider logistics supply chain. It’s vital, therefore, that our staff are trained to the highest industry standards. Logistics is a rapidly expanding industry, but there remains an all-too-wide skills gap which means knowledge isn’t always transferred to those starting out in their careers.

“Thanks to our investment and Pete’s successful completion of the course, we now have a valuable instructing resource in-house, helping us develop our own workforce internally. ‘Training the trainers’, and continual investment in staff at all levels, will be pivotal in bridging the skills gap.”
