Owens-Illinois (O-I), the world’s largest manufacturer of glass packaging, has extended its capability to produce black glass packaging solutions for beverages in Europe. Building on the existing offer for spirits and premium wines from the UK and from France, O-I has upgraded its Leerdam plant (Netherlands) to introduce black glass for beer customers. After the US-based company invested €21M in an asset optimization program for Leerdam, completed in 2013, it now invested in Black Glass capability. The plant is located in the centre of the European brewing industry and will be the third O-I site in Europe capable to produce black glass. In 2015, the company will introduce two 33 cl beer standards bottles in black glass.
