Shrink wrapping equipment supplier Yorkshire Packaging Systems, which recently celebrated its 35th year of trading, has installed a sleeve wrapping line into the Gilberdyke factory of bird food specialists Johnston & Jeff.
Johnston & Jeff is a 130-year old established family business supplying bird seed to the retail trade. It has recently undergone rapid expansion and so were looking to provide further automation in order to speed up production and meet the growing demand. The equipment YPS supplied consisted of a semi-automatic sleeve sealer and tunnel designed to handle multi-packs of bird seed for transit. The machinery was unique because the unit was fitted with a special outfeed belt for ensuring stability of the packs as they transferred into the tunnel which was crucial. The benefits to Johnston & Jeff are reported to have been substantially reduced costs thanks to the move away from cardboard packaging as well as a vast increase in production volumes due to speeding up its operation.
