UK distributor Laser Lines Ltd offers the complete range of Synrad CO2 lasers ideally suited to laser marking plastics for the packaging industry. Polyethylene terephthalate, better known as PET or PETE is a thermoplastic, which means that the plastic typically exhibits some melting, but does not chemically degrade when marked by CO2 lasers. The standard 10.6 micron (µm) wavelength from the CO2 laser provides a transparent mark while the alternate 9.3 µm wavelength generates a whiter, higher contrast mark due to its superior absorption into the PET material. In addition the mark speeds may be faster at equivalent power compared to the 10.6 µm wavelength. Using a Synrad Series V30 laser with a Synrad FH Flyer marking head, a green shampoo bottle was marked with a logo design and the resulting white semi-transparent logo design was marked in a cycle time of 1.5 seconds per bottle.
