Smurfit Westrock unveils ‘breakthrough’ paper-based packaging innovation

Smurfit Westrock innovation event

SMURFIT Westrock has announced the launch of ActiBlu, a prototype solution designed to eliminate the need for traditional gluelines in paper-based packaging.

ActiBlu is an adhesive applied during the production of the packaging, removing the need for glue application when the box is closed. It is activated by a fine mist of water and seals immediately.

Smurfit Westrock unveiled the solution during the company’s 2026 Innovation Event in the Netherlands, which brought together over 450 customers, partners and innovation leaders from across multiple industries to explore the role of how Artificial Intelligence, sustainability and design are shaping the future of paper-based packaging innovation.

Arco Berkenbosch, chief innovation officer at Smurfit Westrock, said, “ActiBlu simplifies the packing process for our customers. The transition to the solution requires a modification from glue application to spraying a fine mist of water on packing lines, reducing operational complexity while maintaining performance.”

ActiBlu is said to use up to 60% less adhesive than traditional hot-melt gluing, supporting sustainability ambitions and helping to meet evolving regulatory requirements, including PPWR, through improved recyclability. The product is now in the pilot phase with Smurfit Westrock working with partners to test and fine-tune the solution in operational environments.

Smurfit Westrock added that the 2026 Innovation Event also saw the introduction of three AI‑based tools, designed to improve packaging performance on shelf and across the supply chain.

“This is about building a future that balances innovation with responsibility: powered by people, guided by nature, and enhanced by AI,” said Berkenbosch. “By bringing human creativity, nature’s intelligence, and advanced technology together, we’re creating solutions that are not only smarter, but more sustainable and meaningful for a changing world.”
