Domino brews up high-speed laser coding for beer bottles

Beer bottles on filling line

DOMINO Printing Sciences has teamed up with brewery giant Erdinger in Germany to implement its new Dx1060i 100W CO2 laser coder.

Erdinger processes up to 165,000 bottles per hour at its site in Erding, Bavaria. The company has utilised Domino’s laser marking technology for more than three decades to apply production and traceability information to its beer labels.

Each of the brewery’s filling lines runs at speeds of up to 60,000 bottles per hour, applying laser printed codes to metallised labels, controlled by an automated centralised ERP system. Domino explained that this application requires high energy levels and precise beam control. The move from two-line to three-line codes to meet export requirements added further complexity, prompting the switch from a 60-watt D-Series laser coder to Domino’s new 100-watt Dx1060i.

“Domino managed the entire integration with our ERP system seamlessly,” said Erdinger’s maintenance specialist. “Replacing the printer on the production line was truly plug-and-play. We were particularly impressed by the proactive support, and its remote diagnostics team was able to resolve any issues before they even became a problem. Domino has always offered premium support, and that is one of the key reasons we rely on its laser systems.

“In an environment where 165,000 bottles are filled every hour, it is extremely important to keep downtime and waste to a minimum to avoid hitting the bottom line. This printer not only enables sharper coding, but also brings wastage to near zero, supporting this aim and helping to meet sustainability targets at the same time.”

The Dx1060i CO2 laser coder is said to have delivered ‘consistently sharp, durable codes and integrated smoothly’ into Erdinger’s highly automated filling line and central ERP system.

“Working with Erdinger to integrate the Dx1060i in such a demanding production environment demonstrates the system’s capability and reliability at scale,” added Frauke Schroeder, senior product manager – laser, Domino. “It’s rewarding to see our latest technology supporting one of the world’s most respected breweries in delivering consistent quality and efficiency, and we are proud to continue to meet the needs of a valued long-term partner.”

Erdinger is exploring opportunities to extend the deployment of the Dx1060i across additional production lines. The product is part of Domino’s i-Techx generation of high-resolution laser coding systems.
