Arla marks Recycle Week with ‘major’ milestone

ARLA has marked Recycle Week by announcing that it has taken a ‘major’ step towards offering fully recyclable packaging and zero vrigin plastics across its entire Arla branded product range.

The dairy cooperative’s branded milk range is already recyclable, but today it announced that it has switched its Arla Cravendale and Arla B.O.B 1 litre bottles produced at its Stourton site, to post-consumer recycled PET (rPET).

Additionally, Arla LactoFREE cheddar packs will have new packaging made from a mono material, which will offer a recyclable solution in accordance with OPRL guidelines. This will be the first for UK cheese blocks using mono material on a high-speed, multi-jawed packing machine.

Catriona Mantle, head of milk, organic, and yogurt at Arla, commented, “Today’s announcement is a major step towards our strategy of delivering fully circular packaging that is free of virgin fossil plastics by 2030, and 100% recyclable packaging across our entire branded product range.

“This is a massive achievement and the culmination of years of scoping and planning with our partners at Logoplaste and Wipak UK. On Arla LactoFREE – this process has taken approximately four years to develop – in partnership with Wipak UK.

“These are the latest in a series of changes made by Arla on packaging, with the most recent announcement being the introduction of clear caps across our private label milk. We are also launching a carton line for fresh milk from our Stourton site in Leeds. But we’re not stopping there, as we will be introducing more changes across our branded portfolio, as we continue to move towards zero virgin fossil plastics.”
