APPLE has unveiled its first entirely fibre-based packaging for its new Apple Watch line-up as part of its acceleration towards plastic-free packaging by 2025.
Further to this, the packaging for all of the new iPhone 15 models will be ‘over 99%’ fibre-based.
The innovation comes after Apple developed fibre alternatives for packaging components such as screen films, wraps, and foam cushioning. In 2022, it also created a custom printer which allowed for digital printing directly onto boxes, which it explained eliminated the need for most labels. A new overprint varnish was also developed which replaced the polypropylene plastic lamination found on boxes and packaging components.
In addition to the use of fibre-based packaging, Apple has also redesigned the packs of all its Apple Watch Series 9 and SE models to allow for more compactness – with it saying that the new, smaller shape allows for 25% more devices per shipment.
