Notpla wins top environmental award for seaweed and plant innovation

PACKAGING manufacturer Coveris is celebrating the success of its partner, Notpla, winning top environmental award, The Earthshot Prize.

Founded in 2020 by Prince William and the Royal Foundation, the Earthshot Prize aims to find innovative solutions that can repair the planet by 2030.

Recognised for its efforts to create a sustainable and biodegradable alternative to plastic made from seaweed and plants, Notpla was crowned the winner in the ‘Build a Waste-Free World’ category.

As the development and print partner for Notpla’s coated board packaging, Coveris has worked with the organisation to manufacture a variety of fully printed board packs using its barrier coating technology. Made from seaweed and plant extracts, Notpla Coating is applied to sustainably sourced cardboard, creating a food-safe barrier function and naturally biodegrades in four to six weeks.

Notpla’s packs offer the food-to-go and takeaway sector a range of protective, recyclable and biodegradable solutions.

Nigel Hewitt, Coveris’ BU paper sales director, said, “We’re hugely proud to work with Notpla to support their packaging. It’s very inspiring to work with such an innovative company and is fantastic that their hard work has been recognised with this monumental achievement. It’s a pleasure to collaborate with such a great company that, like Coveris, is committed to building a more sustainable future.”
