THE City of Edinburgh Council has launched a new campaign encouraging residents to have a ‘less wasteful Christmas’.
It follows on from the capital’s net zero challenge, which encouraged people to learn about the cost to the climate of everyday actions.
Now the city’s residents are being urged to buy more responsibly this Christmas by avoiding waste where possible, choosing local suppliers and products, asking for pre-loved or homemade gifts and cutting down on food waste.
Residents are also being encouraged to use the Edinburgh Reuse Map, which allows for users to discover where items can be sourced second-hand or for free, fixed donated or even up-cycled.
Tips on wasting less over the festive season will be promoted through billboards and bus shelters in Edinburgh, as well as on social media and the radio.
Depute leader of the City of Edinburgh Council, Cammy Day, commented, “Although going totally waste free this Christmas may be a tall order, there’s still lots we can all do to cut down. Small changes do add up and, as well as being good for the environment, can often save you time and money too. For example, planning your meals ahead of time so you only buy the food you need can help you save up to £437 a year, and helps us tread more lightly.”
