BERRY Bramlage has won two German Packaging Awards in the sustainability category for two new packaging solutions.
The Lip Care stick and Magic Star Light were praised for their move to a mono-material pack, which improves recyclability and reduces their weight without the loss of functionality or consumer convenience.
Berry explained that the design of the Lip Care stick has been optimised from a 4-part assembly with a polyoxymethylene (POM) piston to a 3-part version with a polypropylene (PP) piston. As well as being easier to recycle due to all components being made from PP, the 3-part construction is lighter than its previous generation. The stick can be specified in two versions, with a 2.5 turn for a slow opening and a 0.75 turn for a faster opening.
The Magic Star Light has replaced a metal spring in the dispenser head with a PP version, which has been produced as a mono-material pack. This, Berry said, has resulted in a ‘significant’ weight reduction for new all-plastic package.
“As a leader in design for circularity, we are delighted to win these prestigious awards,” said Thierry Bernet, Berry’s circular economy director. “They are a fitting endorsement of our commitment to develop packs that maximise the many benefits of plastics while minimising their impact on the environment.”
Organised by the German Packaging Institute, the German Packaging Awards honoured a total of 52 innovations from six countries this year. The awards will be presented at Fachpack in September.
