Asda attracts big name to refill trial

COCA-COLA is to launch a reverse vending machine in Asda’s flagship sustainability store in Leeds.

It comes as part of the supermarket’s trial of refill stations, with Glasgow’s Toryglen store forming part of the pilot.

Pre-filled one litre glass bottles of Coca-Cola Original and Zero Sugar will be available in the English store, with customers depositing the empty bottle into a reverse vending machine – with Coca-Cola cleaning and reusing each bottle.

The likes of Mars, Napolina and Kellogg’s have also announced further products will be available in the five trial stores, with Asda saying that the refill stations have proved to be ‘extremely popular’ – with ‘several’ products ‘outstripping’ packaged sales.

Susan Thomas, director of commercial sustainability at Asda, said, “We have always said that working in partnership with other likeminded businesses will be vital if we are to persuade people to shop more sustainably. We are very pleased to secure the backing of some of the UK’s most recognisable consumer brands which means we can offer customers even more of their favourite products in refillable format.”
