ANTALIS is claiming to be helping businesses make better-informed packaging decisions by providing access to detailed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data and analysis.

Through Sphera’s LCA software and environmental database, Antalis can compare the environmental impact of different packaging solutions across their lifecycle. The technology provides access to LCA datasets covering different materials, industries and geographical markets.

Antalis stressed it is not making the choice for the customer. Instead, it provides the data and comparisons needed to understand the potential impact of different options, allowing businesses to consider the findings alongside their own priorities, requirements and supply chains.

“Customers are increasingly asking us how they can make better packaging choices, but there is no one-size-fits-all answer,” said John Garner, packaging category director at Antalis. “What is right for one application may not be right for another. Our role is to provide the evidence that allows customers to understand the differences and make an informed choice.”

The assessment goes beyond simply comparing the materials used in a product. Antalis can assess existing packaging and consider the complete lifecycle, from design and raw materials through manufacturing, transport, use, recycling, and end of life. This helps identify where the greatest environmental impacts occur and where opportunities to improve exist.

For example, Antalis revealed that a customer considering polypropylene tape versus paper tape may assume the paper option is automatically the more sustainable choice. However, the answer can be more complex. The LCA approach enables assessment across the lifecycle, accounting for factors such as materials, manufacturing, transportation, and end-of-life considerations.

Sphera’s LCA solution includes more than 20,000 full LCA datasets, covering 80 countries and more than 60 industries, alongside emissions data and industry-specific information.
