ESTRELLA Damm’s limited-edition 150th anniversary cans –Â featuring iconic Barcelona landmarks – have been named the winner in the first round of the 2026 Can Makers Design Accolade awards.
Guinness received a special commendation for its first-ever limited-edition Christmas cans, which drew praise from judges for its ‘nostalgic charm and hidden design details’.
First launched in 2022, the Design Accolades recognise design excellence in the canned beverage sector, assessing entries on shelf presence and brand positioning.
John O’Maoileoin, chairman of the Can Makers UK, said, “The winning design made strong use of the beverage can format to tell the story of Estrella Damm, with each of the seven cans featuring a different Barcelona landmark – including La Sagrada FamÃlia, the historic Old Damm Brewery and Camp Nou. Estrella Damm was founded in Barcelona in 1876 and that origin comes through clearly in every design.”
“The consistency of design across the full range was exceptional. The shelf presence was strong, and the quality of finish really demonstrated the creative potential of the beverage can.”
The 2026 awards are said to reflect a broader trend in the UK beverage market, with brands increasingly turning to the can format as a key part of their marketing strategy; using design to drive consumer engagement, build brand identity and stand out on shelf. Can Makers said the variety and quality of entries underlined how far can design has evolved on recent years.
Luke White, MD of DammUK, said, “We’re proud to receive the Can Makers UK Design Accolade for our 150th anniversary collection. The packaging celebrates an important milestone in Estrella Damm’s history, while remaining true to the character and authenticity of our brand. This collection was designed to celebrate our heritage and our long-standing connection with Barcelona, bringing to life the places and symbols that have shaped Estrella Damm over the last 150 years.”
The Can Makers UK Design Accolade is awarded on a bi-annual basis, with the judging panel set to meet again later in 2026. For more information and how to enter, visit www.canmakers.co.uk.
