Apprenticeships and sustainability legislation on agenda during MP’s visit to Amcor site

MP Jess Asato visit's Amcor facility

AMCOR recently welcomed Lowestoft MP Jess Asato to its Beccles site for a tour of the facility and to highlight its Apprentice Academy.

The site specialises in designing, producing and decorating products including plastic bottles, jars, flexible tubes and closures for health, beauty and wellness applications.

The visit provided insight into the inner workings of the business unit and some of the legislative impacts that the packaging industry is facing, particularly Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in the UK and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) in the EU.

“We were delighted that Jess was able to visit our Beccles site and gain a deeper understanding of what we do,” said Joe Horton, Amcor sales director, health beauty & wellness, UK, Benelux & Scandinavia. “As well as showcasing our innovative solutions and how they’re manufactured, we highlighted our commitment to apprentices and how they are integral to the future of the business.”

The Apprentice Academy is an in-house college, training young people looking to take their first steps in manufacturing, or adults looking to switch careers. Beccles currently has 27 apprentices on the programme with another 6-8 planned to start this year.

Jess Asato MP learned how the academy is helping develop skills in the local area and provide training in areas such as plastic processing and printing.

“I had the pleasure of visiting Amcor in Beccles and what an impressive operation it is,” said Jess Asato MP. “As one of the largest employers in our constituency, Amcor plays a vital role in our local economy. From highly skilled manufacturing roles to apprenticeships and long-standing careers, it’s a major source of secure, well-paid jobs for local people.

“It was great to meet the team, hear about the innovation happening on site, and see first-hand the scale of production. The strength of manufacturing in Beccles is something we should be proud of, and businesses like Amcor are a big part of that story. Many local families have a connection to the site, whether currently working there or having done so in the past.”

Joe Horton added, “Visits like these are a brilliant opportunity to demonstrate the difference we make to the community and our investment in fresh talent. We would like to thank Jessica for her time and hope that she gained valuable insight into Amcor’s operation in Beccles.”
