MONDI has opened a new packaging production facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, further expanding its manufacturing capabilities in the US to better support customers with paper-based packaging solutions.
The new plant produces a range of paper bags for customers in the e-commerce, food, feed, building materials and chemicals sectors. The facility brings together production previously located at Mondi’s Wellsburg, West Virginia and Oakdale, Pennsylvania sites, while adding automated technology.
Mondi said the Pittsburgh plant ‘significantly’ expands production capacity in the US, with a particular focus on the fast-growing e-commerce sector, including paper mailer bags. Thr company added that automated production lines and ‘advanced’ printing capabilities are designed to meet key requirements such as scalable volumes, short lead times, and consistent quality. After completing the ramp up phase, the plant is expected to reach an annual capacity of 300 million paper bags.
“The opening of our new Pittsburgh plant marks an important milestone for our paper bags business in North America,” said Rory Taylor, president paper bags Americas, Mondi. “By bringing production together in a modern facility, we are strengthening our ability to support customers with reliable, high-quality paper bag solutions while responding more effectively to evolving customer needs across growing end markets.”
By the end of this year, approximately 170 people are expected to work at the site.
