THERMOFORMED packaging provider Macpac has teamed up with Valpak to develop a bespoke carbon calculator tool to help clients make informed decisions about packaging design whilst adhering to increasingly stringent regulations.
Developed to provide clear, comparable LCA data, Macpac’s new carbon assessment solution compares the carbon footprints of many different types of packaging, including plastic, bio-plastics, paper and card. Clients can assess if they are using the right material for their design. The tool can show the potential savings when using high recycled content, downgauging, changing material, or reducing pack size for example.
The carbon assessment can be implemented at concept stage, providing time to explore other options and make adjustments if necessary. However, calculations can also be completed for packs already in development and existing product lines.
Macpac explained that the carbon calculator provides visual outputs tailored for each individual client. The data sheet format is suitable for internal use and sustainability reporting.
In line with the firm’s own sustainability strategy, Macpac uses rPET material in its thermoformed packaging products. This contains at least 30% post-consumer recycled material and is 100% recyclable.
