Tortilla to cut 178kg of plastic waste per year with new machine

TORTILLA is to introduce the Speedwrap Pro 300 Dispenser across all of its 74 UK sites in a move set to remove 178kg of plastic waste per year.

The Mexican street food chain, which has five sites in Scotland, explained that the partnership will remove thousands of small plastic adapters that had previously been used with its food wrap refills – with it estimating to have used 27,450 each year.

Prowrap‘s Speedwrap Pro utilises plastic-free refill rolls, which fit the dispenser without the use of plastic adapter inserts. Removing these adapters will reduce 591kg in CO2 from Tortilla’s supply chain per year, as well as 178kg of plastic waste.

In addition, the transport emissions saved by switching to the UK-made Speedwrap Pro 300 total 733kg over the course of a year – equivalent to charging 1.5 million smartphones.

Emily Bagshaw, central operations director at Tortilla, said, “Delivering  fresh, customisable meals without the environmental guilt is core to our mission at Tortilla. We’re thrilled with the Speedwrap Pro, which delivers outstanding performance and efficiency in our stores, while helping us to reduce our supply chain emissions.”

Ben Creeth, Prowrap sustainability analyst, added, “These small plastic adapters are tiny, but they add up quickly and each one comes with a hidden cost. At Prowrap, we’re proud to be leading the way by shining a spotlight on these hidden costs – but more than that, we’re helping our customers take action, cut waste, and reduce costs with Speedwrap Pro.”
