Metsä Group has revealed that its innovation company, Metsä Spring, is advancing moulded fibre packaging innovation with the launch of the new Muoto punnet products as part of its Muoto Uncoated Fibre Series.
The two different punnet sizes are designed for berries, fruits, and vegetables and will be ready for market testing starting from January.
“We welcome packers to join our pre-commercial sales phase, test, and co-develop the right solution for their needs,” said Tarja Heikkilä, product manager at Muoto. “Our Muoto punnets are durable, plastic-free, fully recyclable, and meet the strict requirements of the upcoming PPWR regulation.”
Made from renewable wood pulp, Muoto is described as fully recyclable and biodegradable. The technology applied in Muoto products converts wet wood pulp into three-dimensional packages without any intermediate steps, meaning the new products would be ready to be shipped to end customers as such. In addition to being easy to mould into different shapes, Muoto is ‘lightweight and strong’.
Muoto products can be used in various applications, from takeaway food service to industrial packing.
“We are extremely happy to launch yet another scalable Muoto packaging solution,” added Niklas von Weymarn, CEO of Metsä Spring. “Our first pilots with industrial partners and customers have been very encouraging, and since last summer, we’ve already seen other Muoto products on the shelves of big retail shops, available for consumers.
“The punnet series is a great match for the market’s need to find alternatives to the current solutions that will not match with the upcoming EU regulation that will take effect in Europe soon.”
