KINGUSSIE High School is to trial serving food from its canteen in reusable lunch containers, in what the Highland Council said could potentially be a ‘first-of-its-kind’ trial within Scottish schools.
The move comes after findings revealed that the majority of waste produced by the council internally comes from education premises. A waste audit conducted in March estimates that, for each pupil in the Highlands, 13kg of non-recyclable waste is produced each year.
The reusable lunch container trial will get underway in September and be accompanied with a communication campaign detailing the reasons and benefits of reducing the waste, as well as new recycling infrastructure being installed in the canteen, common rooms, and playground areas.
A Highland Council report on the trial said, “This initiative provides an opportunity for the council to contribute to the development of more sustainable school catering practices and to share learning with other local authorities.”
