ENVIRONMENTAL and sustainability consultancy Eunomia has appointed Shane Monkman as its new packaging lead.
Shane has worked in the packaging arena for a quarter-of-a-century and developed expertise across the FMCG supply chain. He has led packaging at household brands like McCain Foods (GB) and Asda, where he built and led the packaging team for 14 years and succeeded in removing a quarter of the company’s packaging within two years.
He also grew his own sustainability consulting business and brings experience from working with a range of clients, including national retailers, global food producers, packaging providers, SMEs, and packaging-specific member organisations.
Eunomia added that Shane brings a ‘unique blend of experience’ to the role, having worked directly with government, Defra, ministerial special advisors, contributing to the Advisory Committee on Packaging (ACP), and co-creating what has now become the On Pack Recycling Label (OPRL).
Shane Monkman said, “Retailers, brands, and manufacturers are at a pivotal point, facing complex material challenges and increasing requirements around legislation, reporting, and compliance designed to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. While corporate sustainability strategies and consumer expectations are beginning to influence packaging decisions, there’s a growing need for the wider supply chain to navigate this complexity and establish long-term strategies that support organisations’ broader sustainability goals.
“I’m thrilled to join Eunomia and begin contributing to a new expert packaging advisory service, drawing on the team’s deep global expertise, insight, and resources. I look forward to helping ensure Eunomia has a strong voice at the centre of cross-sector decision-making on packaging sustainability, circularity, and compliance.”
Chairperson Joe Papineschi added, “We’re delighted to bring Shane on board as he brings breadth of incredible experience to our growing team. Shane will help us capitalise on our already very successful private sector business at the intersection of technical and regulatory issues in packaging and packaging waste.
“His appointment marks an exciting moment in the development of our circular economy offering, and we anticipate he’ll play a key role in working with us to shape the global packaging space.”
