PEEBLES-based bottling and packaging machinery supplier Evolution BPS has revealed that the shift towards sustainable solutions has led to a growing number of enquiries for equipment that can handle ‘eco-friendly’ packaging.

The firm has provided machinery to the beverage industry for over 20 years and has witnessed significant changes – including the sector’s current focus on reducing its environmental impact.

“In response to this growing demand, we are experiencing an increased number of requests to provide machinery capable of handling eco-friendly packaging, both for current needs and future developments” key account manager Mark Blaik stated.

Evolution partners with manufacturers to deliver tailored solutions. One partner is MBF, an Italian company with a pedigree in bottling technology designed to produce outcomes for the packaging of wines, spirits, and other beverages. The firm provides bottling machines, primarily focused on delivering monoblocks that include rinsers, fillers, corkers, and cappers. These can handle traditional glass bottles and also more delicate packaging such as PET and paper bottles.

A key trend in the beverage packaging industry is the use of paper bottles. MBF has developed a gravity bottling machine, which operates without the need for vacuum, and is said to be ‘ideal’ for paper bottle processing. The company also offers solutions to adapt existing filling machines, originally designed for glass bottles, to accommodate paper.

For light PET bottles, MBF’s Ultra-Low Vacuum (ULV) filling machine features patented technology and is an evolution of the classic Low Vacuum filling machine. It addresses the challenges of filling light PET bottles without causing deformation. The vacuum system operates both within the bottle and the filling tank, preventing the natural collapse of the bottle.

MBF’s filling valves are designed to maintain the integrity of the product, ensuring alcohol and aromas are preserved during the filling process, which is especially important for wines and premium spirits.
