Simpler Recycling marks a significant step forward for the UK

Simpler Recycling launch

TODAY’S launch of the Simpler Recycling legislation marks a significant step forward for the UK’s commitment to a more sustainable future, by simplifying processes to increase recycling rates.

These regulations will mean that all businesses with more than ten employees will have to separate plastic, paper and card, glass, metal and food waste from their general waste. This will play a crucial role in reducing waste and ensuring that more materials are recycled efficiently.

Standardising collection and separating paper and card is of utmost importance to avoid cross-contamination from food and other liquids commonly found in co-mingled collection streams. This will enhance the quality of the recycling material and secure the best quality outcome after recycling.

In 2025, consumers are increasingly voicing their demand for stronger sustainable practices, according to the Pro Carton European Consumer Packaging Perceptions Survey. 51% of UK consumers said that a sustainable lifestyle had become more important to them over the last year. Additionally, 67% have reportedly recycled more waste and they believe it is the best way to combat climate change. This shift in consumer behaviour highlights the importance of creating policies to meet the public’s expectations, as people are more engaged than ever in making environmentally responsible choices.

Simpler Recycling responds directly to the growing demands for sustainability and is a call to action for UK businesses to increase their environmental efforts. It is an opportunity for the UK to lead by example, ensuring that sustainability becomes a standard practice. Similar EU legislation, Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) was introduced at the beginning of this year and maintains similar values, with a focus on waste reduction and packaging providing guidance for environmentally friendly behaviours. The implementation of these regulations across Europe is a positive movement toward climate action and reflects the growing consumer demands for a sustainable future.

Pro Carton supports these efforts by continuing to champion eco-friendly packaging solutions that prioritise recyclability and sustainability. With clear policies and consumer demand driving change, the future of recycling in the UK looks brighter than ever.
