ULMA flexes muscles with ‘groundbreaking’ tech for thermoforming machines

ULMA's Width-Flex

ULMA Packaging has announced the launch of Width-Flex – described as a ‘groundbreaking’ technology for thermoforming machines that is designed to tackle format variability challenges.

Width-Flex features a motorised bottom web width adjustment system, which ULMA said enables ‘seamless’ changes in reel width.

One of the benefits is a capability to reduce film waste by up to 80%, ULMA added. Adapting the machine’s width to the specific required format eliminates the necessity for oversized reels and reduces material waste. The system also includes an intuitive operator interface, featuring SOP-guided changeovers displayed on the machine screen, allowing users to complete format changes in less than 45 minutes.

James Couldwell, MD of ULMA Packaging UK, said, “Width-Flex, which is aligned with our #ULMAweCare project, is indicative of ULMA’s commitment to providing innovative, sustainable solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers. This technology not only improves operational flexibility but also offers significant cost savings and sustainability advantages. It’s an exciting development that highlights ULMA’s leadership in the packaging industry.”

The technology is also said to provide greater flexibility to production processes, enabling businesses to adjust both the machine width and advanced settings. This removes the need for extra thermoforming machines tailored to different formats. A washdown-proof design boosts durability and hygiene, making it suitable for a diverse range of industries.
