Team behind pallet reuse initiative hails collection rates

The Pallet LOOP green pallets

THE Pallet LOOP – the pallet reuse scheme for the UK construction sector – has announced its green pallets are now being used to distribute approximately 90% of products manufactured by British Gypsum.

The news follows the introduction of additional pallet specifications, covering more of British Gypsum’s plasterboard range, and comes eight months after the first LOOP pallets entered the building materials supply chain carrying British Gypsum’s bagged plaster products.

Since May last year, The Pallet LOOP (part of BSW Group) has issued more than 700,000 of its bright green pallets – which are designed to be collected from construction projects, building sites and merchants yards, and used again and again.

In November and December, pallet recovery rates hit 30% – three times the typical industry average pallet return rate. The Pallet LOOP has also set up more than 7,000 collection points on its system – enabling companies to return pallets and access its PayBack scheme, which offers a financial incentive of up to £4 for every green LOOP pallet returned for reuse.

Steve Ottaway, head of operations at The Pallet LOOP, said, “From a standing start, we are delighted with what we have achieved with our pallet collection rates. As well as demonstrating the effectiveness of a closed loop pallet collection system, our return rates underscore the willingness of all parts of the construction industry to embrace a different way of working.”

The Pallet LOOP operates a network of pallet manufacturing and pallet collection hubs in conjunction with Scott Pallets.
