MCC Group doubles production capability for PP/EVOH trays

DUMBARTON-based retail food packaging specialist MCC Group has announced it has implemented a new supply chain for high volumes of PP/EVOH/PP barrier trays, which has reportedly doubled manufacturing capability.

With demand for PP/EVOH/PP barrier materials growing, MCC Group said it has executed a new route to production, partnering with select extrusion sites globally, investing in new tooling, and utilising established thermoforming capability within the UK.

MCC Group revealed food manufacturers have experienced difficulties securing a sustainable high barrier PP supply in recent years. The firm’s recent development ‘massively’ increases availability in the UK, which will shorten lead times and increase supply availability for the ambient ready meal market.

MCC Group operates across the UK with food manufacturers and retailers to create bespoke retail packaging solutions across an array of substrates and formats.

The business added that it has secured a ‘creative and well controlled’ supply chain for high barrier trays and base webs – key to production of trays due to its ability to prolong product shelf-life, whilst also offering ambient storage of meals.

The project has already led to a ‘surge’ in orders.

“This product is simply in high demand from our customers, and over the last few years we’ve seen businesses struggle to secure their own supplies – with our new customers saying running out of product has been a huge challenge for them previously,” explained MD Michael McCahery. “Within the first six weeks we’re already had orders for over 10 million units made with barrier PP, and we’re expecting this to remain with continued strong growth.”

This deal marks one in a series of supply chain innovations for the business – recently securing UK distribution with European foils manufacturer Cuki Cofresco.
