EARTH Action has granted all governments access to its global plastic data platform Plasteax.

Plasteax has been in use for over three years, offering plastic production, leakage, and waste management metrics to a variety of organisations. Its data is already in use by teams at select Fortune 500 companies, sustainability consultancies such as Quantis and South Pole, and organisations including the World Economic Forum’s Global Plastic Action Partnership and WWF.

Over the past nine months, Earth Action has been working to digitise the platform for easier use by fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies and to enable the integration of new data into the Plasteax model.

Earth Action revealed it is collaborating with governments to integrate their plastic data into the Plasteax system. This will allow governments to access data that can inform their waste policies, particularly in preparation for the upcoming Global Plastic Treaty negotiations and post-ratification.

The announcement comes ahead of the final round of negotiations for a UN Global Plastic Treaty in November.

The Plasteax platform provides access to waste management data for 72 countries, nine different polymer types, and six packaging categories.

Nathan Cole, global director of plastics, CDP, said, “As we look ahead to the Global Plastics Treaty, it’s critical to have a unified approach to data collection that supports both governments and corporations in managing their plastic data transparently and effectively. Plasteax offers a comprehensive, standardised solution, integrating government and corporate data to provide a trusted central resource for plastic footprint management.”

Julie Gossen, responsible investment specialist, Degroof Petercam Asset Management, added, “Plasteax has been instrumental in shaping our country sustainability assessments, particularly in understanding the impact of plastic waste management for our investment decisions. We actively have engaged dialogues with governments on addressing plastic pollution and encourage them to leverage Plasteax as well. By doing so, we can enhance the quality of available data, benefiting both policy-making and corporate sustainability.”

Darren West, global head of circular economy solutions, SAP, commented, “SAP is proud to be partnering with Plasteax to further strengthen data quality and support more sustainable practices across industries. By integrating Plasteax’s comprehensive data into SAP’s solutions, we enable consumer goods companies — 80% of which already use SAP —to align their sustainability reporting with global standards.”
