BERRY Global’s new Berry Circular Polymers recycling facility in Leamington Spa has been named as Plastics Recycling Business of the Year at the 2024 Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management.
Recognising innovation, dedication, and success among the recycling and waste industry, local authorities, and the wider sector, Berry said the award underscores its commitment to advancing a circular, net-zero economy using its proprietary, closed-loop CleanStream technology.
Rosie Barbier, commercial director of rigid plastics for Berry circular polymers at Berry Global, said, “As one of the global sustainable packaging leaders, we’re invested in lowering our carbon footprint and increasing the use of recycled content to give plastic multiple lives.
“This prestigious award underscores the significance of our revolutionary CleanStream technology and its ability to deliver high-quality, recycled plastic that advances the circular economy by keeping used plastics out of the waste stream.”
With the capacity to recycle nearly 40% of all polypropylene waste collected from domestic recycling bins in the United Kingdom, Berry’s innovative CleanStream technology offers the UK’s first domestically recovered, mechanically recycled, contact-sensitive, recycled plastic at scale, the firm explained.
According to an in-depth life-cycle analysis by Quantis, packaging made with CleanStream recycled material from Berry’s Leamington Spa facility has up to 35% lower carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions than virgin plastic – a reduction of up to 36,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
