TESCO is to trial new ‘pillow packs’ for its own-brand mince in a move that it says will see the use of 70% less plastic than seen in its previous mince packaging.
Described by the retailer as the ‘opposite to vacuum packs’, pillow packs are ‘slightly’ inflated so that the pillow keeps the mince in ‘perfect’ condition and prevents it from being compressed.
The new packs will contain the same amount of mince as in the previous packs, however the packaging will be smaller in size. Tesco said this means fewer lorries will be needed to transport them and stores will be able to stock more packs on shelves.
Initially to be trialled on its 5% and 20% fat steak mince, the retailer said it will roll it out across more lines if customers respond well. The supermarket added that customers can put the packs into the front of store recycling units with their other soft plastic.
Dom Morrey, Tesco commercial director for fresh, said, “As well as looking for great value when they shop, customers want to see less plastic packaging in their trolleys. Pillow packs are a win-win: they keep the mince in perfect condition while requiring much less plastic.Â
“Removing or reducing unnecessary plastic is an important way that Tesco can reduce its environmental impact. We’re proud of what we have done so far but continue to look for ways to do more.”
