QR codes help Manchester gin maker show carbon footprint of bottles

THE Label Makers has worked with The Spirit of Manchester Distillery to relabel its existing small-batch Manchester Gin – Signature.

The move comes as part of a trial, run in conjunction with Avery Dennison, using digital technology to incorporate a variable data QR code to the rear label of each bottle – with each QR code showing the bottle’s full carbon footprint.

Once scanned, the QR code will provide information on the distillery processes, ingredients used, information about the company, and suggested serves for the product.

In creating the label, The Label Makers used variable data technology through its Xeikon CX 3 digital press, which enabled each label to have an individually printed QR code per label. The labels were then embellished via an ABG Digicon Series 3.

Fiona King, head of marketing at The Spirit of Manchester Distillery, said, “As always The Label Makers are up for any challenge, providing quick, amazing communication and being able to make anything work. They go above and beyond to deliver exactly what we need every time, are innovative and make our ideas a reality.

“We have proved that this groundbreaking technology works, and that going forward many businesses will be able to accurately measure the unique carbon footprint of their products, as well as giving consumers full environmental transparency when choosing a product to purchase.”

The Label Makers’ Ben Robinson added, “Over the years, we have established a great working relationship with The Spirit of Manchester Distillery and we are delighted to have been part of this particular project. Providing full environmental transparency of the production process is a great concept that we fully endorse.”
