Monolayer recyclable pouch scoops award

SUN Chemical and Elif’s monolayer recyclable pouch has received an award at the 2023 Worldstar Global Packaging Awards.

The trophy was presented by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) at the Interpack trade show in Düsseldorf on May 6.

The monolayer PE barrier pouch, developed using Sun Chemical’s SunBeam Advance 5 Electron Beam offset inks, also includes the company’s printable SunBar Aerobloc barrier coating. A final electron beam cured coating layer is said to offer elevated heat seal resistance.

The pouch passed recyclability testing by recycling alliance, Interseroh. The SunBeam Advance 5 offset inks also benefit from approximately 30% bio-renewable material when independently assessed for bio-renewable carbon content.

Jonathan Sexton, marketing manager energy curing products EMEA at Sun Chemical, commented, “With sustainability at the forefront of our agenda, we are consciously collaborating with key stakeholders in the field, such as Elif -a Huhtamaki company, to produce innovative, cutting-edge and eco-friendly solutions.

“We are thrilled that the recyclable monolayer pouch – featuring our SunBeam Advance 5 Electron Beam offset inks and SunBar Aerobloc barrier coating – is being globally recognised and celebrated by the World Packaging Organization. We will keep striving to develop packaging solutions that will help our customers to be more sustainable.”

WPO president, Pierre Pienaar, added, “Winning a WorldStar Award is a global recognition and puts your packaging on a different and prestigious level. This year, the high standard of submissions reflected the focus of the global packaging industry in innovation and sustainability. We saw a wide range of unique ideas in all categories.”
