Making the packaging world go round

By Christopher Morgan, global sales director, Filtrona Tapes

IN an era of environmentally-aware consumers, the demands on packaging manufacturers have never been greater.

In a recent consumer survey by Filtrona Tapes, 70% of respondents identified frustrations with packaging. 43% reflected that recyclability was among their top three issues with the packaging they received. Still, alongside this, cartons with no opening device ranked number two for the most frustrating pack types.

Today’s e-commerce packaging must be much more than a protective, disposable layer. Customers won’t tolerate a choice between sustainability and convenience: they expect both.

The packaging lifecycle

The packaging lifecycle is a topic that’s fast becoming a focus for manufacturers, not only regarding more sustainable material selection.

With the increasing demand for e-commerce comes the growing need for returns.

Worldwide at least 30% of all products ordered online are returned. Adapting e-commerce packaging from a single-use delivery method to a return-ready, multi-use item could reduce packaging waste and improve the consumer experience with packaging and the brand.

Rippatape Halo

The first step in creating return-ready packaging is addressing openability. In 2020, 48% of consumers said they had to use knives or other tools to get into packs. This creates a risk of damaging the product and could destroy the pack’s structural integrity, rendering returns impossible.

Filtrona Tapes’ game-changing paper-based Rippatape Halo provides frustration-free access to paper and board-based packaging. Part of our ECO Range, Rippatape Halo combines consumer convenience, experience, and recyclability into one neat solution.

Supporting a truly circular economy, Rippatape Halo is recyclable along with paper and board packs, is fully reclaimable, eliminates the plastic film used in standard tear tapes, and focuses on fibre recovery.

Rippatape Halo is the perfect example of how recyclability doesn’t have to mean sacrificing performance.

EASILINER

Buying and opening a purchase is only the first part of the journey. Now, most consumers expect an easy returns experience. And this experience should follow suit. 92% of consumers will buy a product again if the returns are easy.

Returns can be made simple and circular with Filtrona Tape’s EASILINER range of paper-based silicone release liners. Developed with e-commerce front of mind, EASILINER enables the preservation of adhesive qualities in packaging formats where a glue line is used in production.

Paired with the SF-AS applicator range and used in tandem with the widely deployed Rippatape tear tape collection, it represents a complete opening and closing solution for packaging manufacturers. This approach offers a simple way of creating return-ready e-commerce packaging solutions for consumers and manufacturers alike.

Today

We’re committed to our own ambitious environmental goals and those of our customers. Through our growing ECO range, we continue to add innovative developments of more renewable and environmentally sustainable products across — until we live in a greener world.

Packaging now must be much more than it once was. Today’s consumers demand circularity and convenience in tandem.

Irrelevance is the most dangerous future a business can face. Often the result of unmet consumer demands and ignored trends can be a company’s death knell.

Combined with a growing worldwide appetite for circularity, businesses must ensure their products meet these new expectations.
