Competition challenges students to design standout bottle designs

O-I Glass has launched its 2023 student design competition alongside Pentawards with a mentorship opportunity at Diageo for the winner.

The initiative challenges students to create a ‘beautiful’ graphical design for a low or non-alcoholic spirits brand.

Entrants will choose their base container from O-I’s contemporary collection, before using O-I EXPRESSIONS – the firm’s direct to glass printing technology – to create a design that stands out in a crowded market.

The competition is open to students, recent graduates, and interns at design agencies around the world. The judges will be:

  • Steve Honour, design leader, innovation, and futures at Diageo
  • Melianthe Leeman, global marketing director wines and spirits, at O-I
  • Adam Ryan, head of Pentawards

Steve Honour said, “To be involved in supporting talent in this way is a pleasure. It’s nice to be able give back and share my knowledge with students that could soon shape the future.  I hope they approach the brief by placing sustainability at the core while still delivering beauty to delight the consumer. And, of course, push boundaries and challenge conventions as that is at the core of design as a whole.”

Five shortlisted designs will be made by the O-I : EXPRESSIONS team and displayed at Packaging Innovations London in September. The overall winner will be announced at the Pentawards Gala Ceremony on 23 September and will win a Pentawards trophy, a mentorship opportunity at Diageo (either in-person on online depending on the student’s location), a sample of their bottle, and a feature in the next Pentawards Design Book.

Melianthe Leeman, global marketing director, wines, and spirits, O-I Glass, said, “The O-I : EXPRESSIONS Student Design Awards are fast becoming a regular feature in the life of design schools across the world. This year, we are delighted to welcome Diageo’s participation on the judging panel, which adds a brilliant injection of commercial reality to the contest.”
