MORRISONS is to trial the introduction of ‘rentable’ boxes on its salad bar in a bid to allow customers to enjoy lunch more sustainably.
It will use fully recyclable polypropylene boxes to replace the existing plastic salad boxes, with the supermarket revealing that the new holders are designed to be used 400 times.
Customers will be required to download the CauliBox app in order to use the boxes, which will allow them to scan a QR code on the salad bar, collect an empty box, fill it and pay as normal.
Once consumed, the boxes can then be returned to an in-store drop-off point when customers next visit. The boxes will then be washed and sanitised before being returned to the pick-up point.
A £5 deposit is held whilst customers use the box, which is then refunded upon the box being returned within seven days.
Lorraine Wheeler, environmental packaging manager at Morrisons, said, “Thousands of customers visit our salad bars every week – and this is increasing as people go back out to work. Until now we’ve stocked recyclable single-use plastic containers, but we think customers will be ready to swap to this reusable box – as it’s so simple to use. We hope to roll it out to more stores this year.”
