Whisky maker unveils plans for cardboard waste to be repurposed into packaging

GLENCAIRN Crystal has revealed it is looking to install machinery that would allow all of its cardboard waste to be reused as packaging.

It comes following a £2 million investment by the whisky maker into its East Kilbride headquarters, as it looks to future-proof the business.

Now it is looking to also advance on its current cardboard operations, which sees the material collected by Viridor to be recycled.

Under the new plans, an industrial shredding machine would be installed at their headquarters, which would enable all cardboard waste to be shredded and used as fully recycled packaging.

Glencairn Crystal said that the move would make the business self-sufficient in packaging solutions and re-use wherever possible, as oppose to relying on just recycling.

Work already undertaken at the firm’s headquarters include installation of an ‘extensive’ solar PV and energy storage system; replacing the gas heating system with a solar PV air conditioning system; the installation of electric car charging points; and a water usage programme which’ll investigate how it can reduce water consumption.

James Crilly, purchasing director at Glencairn Crystal, commented, “Here at Glencairn, we have always embraced change and evolution as a business. Our investment in a sustainable solar PV energy system, alongside a number of key initiatives to encourage the entire company to become more instinctive in their everyday choices, is driving a step-change in the business.

“Our ambition is to be 100% reliable on electrical energy over the next five years, whilst looking to increasingly re-use rather than just recycle: we believe this is fully achievable across the business.”
