A Skye-based organic salmon farming start-up has announced it is launching a packaging solution with reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Organic Sea Harvest revealed that the new fully-compostable packaging will contain less than half the amount of CO2 found in normal packaging.

Further to this, it will also reduce the need for energy at the packing stage and ‘eliminate’ the issue of microplastics.

Dubbed CF422, the packaging will be sourced from CELNOR Eco Packaging Ltd. The Invergordon-based firm specialises in plastic-free, compostable, biomaterial packaging – with the material purpose-grown and sourced in the EU.

The link-up came after Organic Sea Harvest had been searching for packaging in keeping with their organic ethos. With the packs partly composed of calcium carbonate – the same material found in eggshells – the firm explained that the packaging will breakdown in the ground and leave ‘nothing behind except compost’.

It anticipates that its organic salmon portions will be available in the new packaging by early 2022.

CEO of Organic Sea Harvest, Ove Thu, commented, “As people all over the globe work together to overcome climate change, it is important for us that we take every opportunity to safeguard the planet.

“Today’s packaging and transportation of food must change to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.  As an everchanging company, we have been invested in finding a better way to package our frozen salmon portions.  We can now announce we have found a solution, which will be made available to retailers and their customers.

“We have previously worked with CELNOR before and the CF422 packaging we’ll use is not used anywhere else in the industry.  We are delighted to be able to offer our customers and retailers a flavoursome, organic product in environmentally-friendly packaging.

“This is a small, yet not insignificant step, towards securing net zero – a goal we all have a responsibility to work towards.  We are delighted to have set the wheels in motion to offer our customers delicious organic salmon in fully-compostable packaging.

“Everyone has a responsibility to take care of the world we live in – there is no Planet B.  Therefore, we invite retailers to give their customers the opportunity to purchase organic salmon with a lower CO2 footprint.”
