Scottish coffee firm launches compostable capsules

A Scottish coffee producer has launched its beverage in compostable capsules made from plant-based ingredients.

Compatible with Nespresso machines, Gordon Street Coffee said its new pod range looks and feels like plastic but is in fact made from Coda Group’s Solinatara solution, which is made from the byproduct of harvested crops.

Coda Group said the new coffee capsules are home compostable and will break down in the same time as a banana skin – whilst also leaving behind zero contamination or harmful microplastics.

Gordon Street Coffee added that the products will be great for compost, with coffee grounds being a nitrogen rich material which helps break down fruit and vegetable scraps and acts as a slow-release fertiliser.

The capsules will be available to purchase online and also in Gordon Street Coffee’s roasteries in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
