Prosthetic limb socket made from recycled bottles to be showcased

AN academic who led the creation of a prosthetic limb socket made from recycled plastic water bottles is to present his work at Expo 2020.

Dr Karthikeyan Kandan, of the De Montfort University Leicester, will have his work showcased throughout the six-month Dubai event, as well as hosting an event detailing the innovation.

In his role as associate professor at DMU’s school engineering and sustainable development, Dr Kandan found that the granulated material of ground down plastic bottles could be used to spin polyester yarns – which can then be heated up to form a solid, yet lightweight, material that is moulded into prosthetic limbs.

Dr Kandan said, I am excited to be going to Expo to showcase accessible recycled material prosthetic socket technologies.

“It is a huge opportunity and while there I want to focus on networking to generate wider awareness for the newly developed prosthetic socket technologies.”
