Paper bags tipped to contribute to sustainable future

SMURFIT Kappa is marking European Paper Bag Day by helping to distribute 130,000 paper bags across Spain’s Navarra region.

The firm’s Sangüesa paper mill is promoting the use of paper carrier bags as an alternative to plastic bags. The mill teamed up with the Navarra Government to supply the paper to produce bags for distribution in local shops and supermarkets.

Isabel Elizalde, Navarra’s regional minister for the environment, received a tour of the mill and encouraged customers in local stores to try the paper bags. She said, “It’s great to see companies like Smurfit Kappa making a real environmental difference at such a local level. Working together, knowing that the future is better if we make it sustainable, results in paper-based products from our certified forest. Today and tomorrow will be sustainable.”

Laurent Sellier, COO Smurfit Kappa Paper Europe added, “We’re delighted to have collaborated with the Navarra Government to support European Paper Bag day as part of our wider initiative, Better Planet Packaging. At Smurfit Kappa, we have committed to exploring ways in which paper packaging can be used as a sustainable alternative. Paper is 100% recyclable and has the least impact on the environment so it is a viable option for many products.”
