BRITISH Glass has hailed the success of its Glass Guardians campaign, a recycling education initiative that ran in primary schools.
The organisation said the campaign has potentially reached over 96,000 pupils via a teachers’ pack of cross-curricular materials provided in conjunction with the National Schools Partnership.
The initiative was designed to encourage children aged 7-11 to champion the importance of recycling glass bottles and jars and also teach them how glass is 100% recyclable.
Victoria Adams, senior communications officer at British Glass said, “We had a phenomenal uptake of the materials -over 600 packs have been requested by schools across the country and the results indicate that we have inspired a nation of ‘Glass Guardians’ – children who will go on to champion the importance of recycling glass in their communities.”
The pack included a video, activity sheets and teacher’s notes. A competition challenged children to come up with creative ways to encourage their communities to recycle more glass, which attracted over 700 entries. The winning entry was a song written by Mayana Brown (10) and her father.
Victoria Adams added, “The winning entry was not only creative but it really did inspire others to get the glass recycling message. This is exactly what we wanted to achieve with Glass Guardians and seeing how effective the programme has been in spreading the message to recycle more glass is very rewarding.”
