The pie’s the limit for Loma’s inspection units

LOMA Systems, the manufacturers and designers of metal detectors, checkweighers and x-ray inspection machines, are expanding their range of compact systems.

With the new CW3 compact combo metal detector and checkweigher and the X5 SpaceSaver, a compact x-ray machine out, the company are working extensively to reduce the size and footprint of their high performance systems.

As Tony Bryant, UK Sales Manager at Loma Systems, explained,

“You spend a lot of time and effort reducing the machine’s footprint size. We’ve listened to a lot of our customers with regards to ease of use, machine size, detection levels and accuracy and we’ve tried our very best to reduce the purchase cost.”

The CW3 compact combo machine, launched at the end of 2014 is already selling well. Designed for use on demanding production lines with strict space constraints, the system offers the same detection levels and accuracy as Loma’s standard machines.

Operating as both a metal detector and checkweigher, the machine, as with the Loma X5, is more cost competitive than previous models.

The Loma X5 compact x-ray machine has the same ease of use as past machines, yet the purchase cost has been significantly reduced. Available on a lease purchase deal, the machine can be paid for over 2-5 years through monthly payment plans.

Both the X5 and compact combo machine feature colour touch screens, built-in diagnostics and adhere to Loma’s ‘Designed to Survive’ policy.

“Customer requirements now are higher than they ever were”, said Tony. “People demand higher quality machines that are more robust and technically specific.

“Products lines have expanded and so the machines are working harder and faster all the time. Machines need to be easy to operate and user friendly to make the whole process less problematic, and in recent years retail standards really have been driven higher.”

One customer, savoury pastry product manufacturer, The Welsh Pantry, has recently installed a Loma X5 SpaceSaver to inspect its pie products for glass, ceramic and stainless steel contaminants.

Whilst the X5 SpaceSaver installed at The Welsh Pantry is currently operating at speeds up to 35 metres per minute (m/min), the system is capable of running up to 75 m/min. The X5 SpaceSaver X-ray can identify improperly packaged products for: size, shape, length, fill level, component count and presence.

Alan Shaw, Technical Manager at The Welsh Pantry, said, “The need to inspect pies for a range of foreign body contaminants, not just metal, down to the smallest size meant X-ray technology was the best choice for this particular application. However, like many food production facilities, space is at a premium so the launch of the Loma’s super compact X5 SpaceSaver X-ray with significantly smaller footprint was great timing.”

In 2014, Loma Systems announced a 91% first time fix rate from their service and after sales repair and maintenance team.

On average, across all service callouts in the UK, Loma manages to solve nine out of ten problems within one working day of the issue being reported.

An essential part of Loma’s service delivery is the remote diagnostics tool offered with the company’s in-line inspection systems. The feature gives the company full real-time visibility of installed equipment and can be used to make efficient problem diagnosis.
