DIAGEO has spent £344 million to gain control of United Spirits, a business owned by Indian conglomerate Vijay Mallya and the maker of Bagpiper whiskey. The London-based beverages group now holds a 25.02% stake, a development that follows a month after it acquired its original 10% stake and less than Diageo had initially hoped for.
